Young people benefit from getting involved in their communities
(source: www.examiner.com)

• Donate your gently used toys and clothes to a local shelter. You can also contact local literacy programs, who are likely to accept book donations.

• Volunteer at any number of places; food pantries, soup kitchens, libraries, teen pregnancy centers, the local pound, etc.

• Pick up Trash. Find a local park or playground as a safe alternative to roadside trash pick-ups.

• Visit a Nursing Home. Senior citizens love visitors. Simple activities such as reading a book, playing a game or working on puzzles with the residents can make a big impact.

• Shovel a sidewalk or rake a yard for a neighbor who is having trouble doing so on their own.

• Raise money for a local charity. Have a lemonade stand, an art show, a bake sale or grow a garden for the local charity of your choice.

• Plant a tree. Many outdoor organizations put together annual tree-planting events; all you have to do is show up on the day of the event and provide the planting power

• Collect goods for a shelter. Many shelters need basic goods such as food, personal hygiene items, diapers, formula, basic toys, towels and other necessities. Collect from family and neighbors and donate your local one.

• Cook a meal for a family in need – Most kids love to cook! Assist your mom or dad in cooking a meal for a family in your area that’s having a rough time.
